Hi Phil;

I totally agree with you on this note and like the way in which you have described the whole structure as scaffolding;

“All you need is patience, curiosity, and compassion for the suffering of others. Training and accreditation is simply the scaffolding around which those qualities are nurtured.”

Alternatively and with respect Phil, I feel I probably need to disagree on your description of the profession as dysfunctional;

‘Dysfunctional meaning - Abnormal or impaired functioning - Not operating normally or properly. Deviating from the norms of social behaviour in a way regarded as bad.

Source: Wikipedia’

I would be more inclined to use the word 'competitive' and 'comparative' especially within Primary Care Mental Health and in view of the latest statistics via MDS Data (PC-Mis)

“...numerous routes of entry into the profession with many accrediting professional bodies, and inter-professional rivalries abound. Broadly speaking the psychologists think they're better than the psychotherapists who, in turn, think they are better than the counsellors."

So maybe it's about giving oneself a label of; 'Counselling Psychologist Psychotherapist.'

I suppose we should be thankful we’ve not the US environment to battle through...or is it just a matter of time?

Thank you

Regards
Dawn Pugh
